Portugal Overview
Portugal is a country on the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula in Southwestern Europe, bordered by Spain to the east and north and the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south. It also includes the autonomous Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. The capital and largest city is Lisbon, with Porto as a major cultural and commercial center.
Portugal emerged as a kingdom in the 12th century and became a leading maritime power during the Age of Discoveries in the 15th–16th centuries. Today it is a high-income EU and Schengen member with a diversified economy, known for tourism, technology, renewable energy, and quality of life.
From the vineyards of the Douro Valley and the historic centers of Lisbon and Porto to the beaches and cliffs of the Algarve, Portugal offers varied landscapes and a mild Mediterranean climate influenced by the Atlantic.
Portugal is famous for fado music, azulejo tiles, cork production, and wines such as Port and Vinho Verde, alongside landmarks like the Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, and Pena Palace in Sintra.
