The MESCAL Project PhD in Marine Science 2026 is a funded 3-year PhD bursary for students from developing countries. The programme is offered through a collaboration between the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), IRD, and MARBEC.

The selected PhD candidate will work on research about marine protected areas, fish populations, and climate change resilience along the East African coast. The student will mainly spend time between Kenya and France, with possible research travel to other partner countries in the region.
