Syria Overview
Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic (Arabic: الجمهورية العربية السورية), is a country located in Western Asia. It is bordered by Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east and southeast, Jordan to the south, Israel to the southwest, and Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. The capital and largest city is Damascus, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
Syria has a rich historical and cultural legacy as part of ancient civilizations, including the Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Islamic empires. The country was under French mandate until it gained independence in 1946. It has since played a central role in Middle Eastern politics. Despite the ongoing conflict that began in 2011, Syria remains known for its historical architecture, ancient cities, and contributions to art, literature, and science.
