KU Leuven is Belgium’s highest-ranked university in both the QS World University Rankings 2027 and Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, but that does not make it the automatic choice for every student. KU Leuven ranks 59th in QS 2027 and 46th in THE 2026, while universities such as Ghent, UCLouvain, Antwerp, ULB and VUB offer different advantages by subject, language and location.

QS 2027 confirms KU Leuven at 59, Ghent at =150, UCLouvain at =196, ULB at 248, Antwerp at =277, VUB at 295, Liège at =364 and Hasselt at =639.

The different THE results are important because ranking providers measure universities differently. Antwerp, for example, is =170 in THE 2026 despite being =277 in QS 2027. Students should therefore avoid turning one league table into an absolute national order.

Belgium is a federal state in which education is the responsibility of the Flemish, French and German-speaking Communities. Dutch, French and German are the country’s national languages, while English-taught university programmes are also available.

Universities in Flanders

The Flemish higher-education system is binary. It currently includes five universities and 13 universities of applied sciences and arts among its 18 publicly funded higher-education institutions.

Research universities offer academic bachelor’s, master’s, advanced master’s, doctoral and postgraduate programmes. Universities of applied sciences and arts have a stronger practice-based orientation and provide associate degrees, professional bachelor’s programmes and other professionally focused qualifications.

This distinction matters because an international ranking dominated by research universities does not necessarily identify the strongest institution for a student looking for a practice-oriented professional bachelor’s degree.

Universities in French-Speaking Belgium

The Wallonia-Brussels Federation lists five universities, 19 university colleges and 16 schools of arts. Its five universities are UCLouvain, ULB, University of Liège, University of Mons and University of Namur.

Older articles may list Université Saint-Louis – Bruxelles as a separate university. That is outdated. Saint-Louis officially merged with UCLouvain on 14 September 2023 and became UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles.

1. KU Leuven

Students seeking a university in Brussels within the Flemish higher-education system, particularly where VUB’s subject strength matches their degree.

Important Tradeoff

Its overall global ranking is lower than KU Leuven and Ghent. Students should therefore choose VUB because of programme fit, subject performance and location rather than assuming Brussels automatically makes it a stronger academic choice.

7. University of Liège

The University of Liège deserves secondary consideration within French-speaking Belgium when programme-level fit is stronger than its overall position suggests.

It ranks =364 in QS 2027 and 301-350 in THE 2026.

Students who find a specific academic or research reason to choose Liège and want a French-speaking university outside the main Brussels and Louvain-la-Neuve options.

UCLouvain and ULB have stronger overall international ranking evidence. Liège should therefore be shortlisted because the actual course fits the student, not because of a generic claim that every major Belgian university is equally strong.

8. Hasselt University

Ranking Does Not Tell the Whole Story

Belgium provides unusually clear examples of why overall rankings should be treated as one part of the decision.

UCLouvain vs University of Antwerp

QS 2027 ranks UCLouvain at =196 and Antwerp at =277.

THE 2026 reverses their order, placing Antwerp at =170 and UCLouvain at =184.

There is therefore no defensible reason to describe either as Belgium’s uncontested third-best university without specifying the ranking system.

VUB for Law

VUB’s QS overall position is 295, yet THE ranks its Law subject =71 globally in 2026.

For a law applicant, the subject evidence may be much more useful than the overall table.

Ghent in Psychology and Life Sciences

Ghent ranks 115th overall in THE 2026 but is 42nd for Psychology and 49th for Life Sciences.

A student in either discipline should therefore compare Ghent with KU Leuven directly rather than treating Ghent as simply a lower-ranked alternative.

Tuition Fees in Belgium for 2026-27

Belgium does not have one useful universal tuition figure for every international student.

Tuition in Flanders

Official Study in Flanders guidance lists the following general tuition levels for a full-time 60 ECTS programme in 2026-27:

• EU/EEA nationals: €1,181.40
• Non-EU/EEA nationals: generally €5,300 to €12,000
• Non-EU/EEA Schools of Arts programmes: generally €8,800 to €25,000

Institutions set their own exact prices, so students should check the particular degree rather than apply these ranges as a universal university fee.

Tuition in French-Speaking Belgium

From the 2026-27 academic year, current Wallonia-Brussels guidance states that students from Wallonia-Brussels and EU member states pay maximum annual registration fees of €1,194.

Non-EU students who are not covered by an exemption generally pay the registration fee plus an additional €4,175 contribution, giving a total of €5,369 per year. Certain specialist master’s and MBA-type programmes can differ.

Which University Is Cheapest?

The evidence does not support naming one of the eight universities as Belgium’s cheapest.

Exact tuition depends on programme, nationality and exemptions. Housing and living expenses can also change the practical cost.

A student comparing affordability should calculate the cost of the actual programmes being considered rather than use an invented university-wide value ranking.

Admission Requirements for International Students

Belgian universities do not share one universal international admission threshold.

Flemish Universities

Official Flemish guidance says that most foreign qualifications do not automatically create direct admission. For bachelor’s study, the secondary qualification normally needs to provide access to university studies in the country where the diploma was awarded. Institutions make their own admissions decisions.

For most English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes, the general level is B2 English. Study in Flanders equates that with an IELTS overall score of at least 6.0 or TOEFL iBT approximately 72-94, while individual programmes may require more.

Medicine, dentistry and veterinary sciences in the Flemish system have compulsory entry examinations and are taught in Dutch. Schools of arts also use entrance examinations.

Additional programme requirements can include transcripts, GMAT, SAT or other evidence, depending on the institution and degree.

Do Belgian Universities Publish Acceptance Rates?

Reliable, comparable acceptance rates are not available for the universities in this guide.

Third-party websites often estimate them, but those figures should not be used as evidence of admission difficulty.

Students should instead compare official minimum eligibility, prerequisite subjects, language requirements, entrance examinations and programme-specific selection criteria.

Recognition and Accreditation

For regulated professions, recognition can matter more than overall ranking.

In Flanders, NVAO states that accreditation or initial accreditation is a precondition for awarding recognised associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Recognised programmes appear in the Higher Education Register.

NVAO also confirms that universities and university colleges are periodically reviewed under the Flemish quality-assurance system.

Students planning careers in medicine, dentistry, nursing, engineering, psychology, architecture, teaching or other regulated professions should therefore verify the specific degree’s recognition and professional registration consequences.

A university’s QS or THE position cannot substitute for that check.

Scholarships Worth Checking

Master Mind Scholarships

For the 2026-27 academic year, the Flemish Master Mind Scholarship is worth €10,225. For eligible two-year master’s programmes, the same amount is listed for the second academic year, subject to the scheme’s rules.

The scholarship is substantial enough to influence affordability, but applicants must check the current cycle, participating institution and application process before planning around it.

MASTER IN – WBI Grants

Wallonia-Brussels International offers MASTER IN grants to eligible international students undertaking a master’s degree at a recognised institution in French-speaking Belgium.

For the 2026-27 call, applicants needed at least a qualifying bachelor’s degree from a recognised foreign institution, and applications had to reach the targeted institution by 31 March 2026.

Recipients of the 2026-27 MASTER IN grant pay the same registration fees as Belgian and European students.

Because that deadline has passed, students preparing for a later intake should check the next official WBI call rather than assume the 2026 dates will be repeated.

Student Visa, Financial Proof and Work Rules

International-student immigration rules should be checked again immediately before an application because they can change annually.

For 2026-27, Study in Flanders states that the minimum proof of financial means is €1,062 per month. Accepted methods include a blocked university account, qualifying bank guarantee, scholarship or sponsorship.

Can International Students Work?

Belgian federal employment rules state that people authorised to reside in Belgium as students may work during school holidays and, outside school holidays, for no more than 20 hours per week, provided the work remains compatible with their studies.

Post-Study Orientation Year

Belgium also provides an orientation-year route for qualifying graduates. Official Flemish guidance states that the orientation-year residence card is valid for 12 months and cannot be extended, with labour-market access during that period.
