Has Anyone Changed From F-1 to E-2 Investor Status Before Graduating in the USA?

Hi everyone!
I'm looking for advice and firsthand experiences from anyone who has transitioned from an F-1 student visa to E-2 investor status while still studying in the United States.
I'm a Canadian citizen currently pursuing my degree at a US university. My husband is living here with me on an F-2 dependent visa.
We're considering starting or purchasing a business in the United States and exploring whether the E-2 Treaty Investor visa could be a suitable option for us.
However, there's one important thing: I want to finish my degree, even if we transition to E-2 status before graduation.
We have an upcoming consultation with an immigration attorney, but I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have gone through something similar.
Our current situation:
- Nationality: Canadian
- Current immigration status: F-1 student
- Spouse's status: F-2 dependent
- Education: Currently enrolled at a US university
- Business plans: Considering starting or purchasing a US business
- Immigration goal: Exploring E-2 investor status while completing my degree
My main questions are:
- Has anyone successfully changed from F-1 to E-2 status before completing their university degree?
- Were you allowed to continue studying full-time after transitioning to E-2, or did you experience any restrictions?
- Did you apply for a change of status through USCIS while remaining in the US, or did you apply for an E-2 visa through a US consulate?
- How long did your application process take, from preparing the business documents to receiving a decision?
- What type of business did you start or purchase, and how much did you invest, if you're comfortable sharing?
- Did your spouse transition from F-2 to E-2 dependent status? Were they able to obtain employment authorization?
- Were there any complications with your university, SEVIS record, or student enrollment after changing immigration status?
- Did you encounter unexpected expenses, documentation requirements, or challenges proving that your investment qualified for E-2?
- Looking back, would you recommend completing the degree first or pursuing E-2 status while still studying?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from Canadian citizens who have taken this route, although experiences from other E-2 treaty-country nationals would also be helpful.
If you've successfully transitioned from F-1 to E-2 while studying, what would you do differently?
Any practical advice about investment amounts, business selection, processing times, immigration status, or continuing education would mean a lot.
Thank you in advance!
