Hi everyone,

I'm planning to travel from Dubai to India soon and thinking about buying some gold before my trip.

I've heard that gold prices in Dubai can be attractive compared to India, but I'm confused about the customs rules when bringing gold into India.

I'm particularly interested in knowing how much gold passengers can legally carry without paying customs duty and when they need to declare it.

Does it make a difference whether I'm carrying gold jewellery for personal use, newly purchased jewellery, gold coins, or gold bars?

I'm also wondering whether the rules are different for men and women, Indian residents returning from the UAE, or people who have been living abroad for several years.

Has anyone recently travelled from Dubai to India carrying gold? How much did you bring, and were you stopped or questioned by Indian customs?

Did officers ask for purchase receipts, check the weight of your jewellery, or charge any customs duty?

One thing worth remembering is that wearing jewellery doesn't automatically make newly purchased gold duty-free. Genuine used personal jewellery may be treated differently, but buying several new bangles or chains and wearing them through customs isn't a reliable way around declaration requirements. If you're unsure, declare the items and let customs assess them.

The rules are national, so Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi and Hyderabad aren't supposed to have different legal gold allowances. Actual customs checks can vary, but the limit doesn't change depending on which airport you land at. I'd rely on the latest CBIC rules rather than somebody saying they carried a certain amount without being questioned.

Personally, I'd be more careful with gold bars than ordinary personal jewellery. Customs officers may want to verify the purity, weight and eligibility for import. Just because a shop in Dubai sells you a gold bar doesn't mean you're automatically eligible to carry it into India as passenger baggage.

I'd compare the final cost before buying anything. Dubai's gold rate might look attractive, but add making charges, applicable Indian customs duty and currency conversion. Sometimes the difference isn't as impressive as people expect, especially for jewellery with high making charges.

If you are carrying dutiable gold, use the Red Channel and declare it. That's much better than walking through the Green Channel hoping nobody checks your bags. You can also look into the ATITHI customs application for advance baggage declarations. A legal purchase in Dubai doesn't automatically mean duty-free entry into India.

The six-month and one-year requirements confuse a lot of people. Six months abroad can make an eligible Indian-origin passenger qualify for concessional duty on gold imports. More than one year abroad is relevant to the special duty-free jewellery allowance. These are two different benefits, so check which one actually applies to your situation.

I'd definitely keep the original invoice from the Dubai jewellery shop. Make sure it mentions the weight, purity and purchase price. Customs uses its own valuation rules, so the invoice doesn't necessarily determine your duty, but having proper purchase documentation is much better than trying to explain an expensive purchase without a receipt.

Don't confuse gold jewellery with gold coins or bars. Those 20 and 40 gram duty-free limits are specifically for eligible jewellery. If you're buying a 50 gram gold bar from Dubai, you cannot simply claim the jewellery allowance. Eligible passengers may import gold up to 1 kg under separate rules, but customs duty applies.

Nawaz, are you an Indian passport holder, a person of Indian origin, or a Pakistani citizen visiting India? I'm asking because the gold import rules aren't the same for everyone. The concessional gold import facility is generally for eligible Indian passport holders and people of Indian origin who have stayed abroad for at least six months.

One important update for anyone reading this in 2026. Under the new Indian baggage rules, eligible female passengers can bring up to 40 grams of jewellery duty-free, while other eligible passengers can bring 20 grams. You must have been residing abroad for more than one year to qualify for this particular allowance. The old jewellery value caps were also removed.
