Leaving the USA Voluntarily With a Final Removal Order — Could I Be Detained at the Airport?

Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting here, and I'm genuinely looking for advice from people who have direct experience or professional knowledge of US immigration procedures.
I'm planning to leave the United States voluntarily this month, but I already have a final removal order.
I received my removal order approximately two months ago. Since then, I've remained in the US because I needed time to save some money, arrange my travel documents, and prepare for my departure.
I'm now ready to leave, and I've already purchased my flight ticket.
Here's my current situation:
- Immigration status: Final removal order issued approximately two months ago
- Departure plan: Leaving the United States this month
- Departure airport: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
- Flight: International flight with a layover outside the United States
- Travel documents: Arranged for departure
- Flight ticket: Already purchased
My biggest concern is whether I could be detained at the airport before boarding my flight.
I know there is a departure process available through the CBP Home app, but I've read accounts from people saying the process took weeks or even months.
Initially, I thought registering through the app would mean my departure would be processed immediately. That's why I didn't start the process earlier.
Now that I've already booked my flight and am ready to leave, I'm unsure whether I should still register through the app or simply proceed with my travel plans.
I've also received conflicting legal advice.
One immigration lawyer told me:
"You can buy a ticket and leave. They won't stop you."
Another lawyer strongly recommended registering through the official departure process first, warning that I could otherwise face detention.
These conflicting opinions have made me even more anxious.
My questions are:
- Can someone with a final removal order legally depart the United States using a regularly booked commercial international flight?
- Is registering through the CBP Home departure process mandatory before leaving?
- Could ICE or CBP detain someone with an outstanding final removal order at the airport, even if they have a valid ticket and are actively trying to leave?
- Does departing from a busy international airport like Atlanta make any difference?
- Would having an international layover rather than a direct flight create additional complications?
- Should I notify ICE or another immigration authority about my departure before traveling?
- How can I make sure my departure is properly recorded for future immigration purposes?
- Has anyone personally departed the US under a final removal order, or helped a client through this process?
I'm not trying to avoid immigration authorities or delay my departure. I simply want to leave the country safely and follow the correct legal process.
I would particularly appreciate responses from immigration attorneys, accredited representatives, or people who have personally experienced something similar.
If possible, please share official resources or explain which immigration procedures apply.
I'm already feeling overwhelmed by the situation, so I'd appreciate respectful and factual advice rather than criticism or speculation.
Thank you for understanding and for any guidance you can provide.
