Suriname, officially the Republic of Suriname, is the smallest country in South America, located on the northern Atlantic coast of the continent. It is bordered by Guyana to the west, Brazil to the south, French Guiana to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. The capital and largest city is Paramaribo.

Suriname has a rich cultural heritage shaped by its Indigenous, African, Indian, Javanese, and European influences. The country was a former Dutch colony until it gained independence in 1975. Dutch remains the official language, making Suriname the only Dutch-speaking country in South America. The economy relies on mining (bauxite, gold), agriculture, and oil exports.

Much of Suriname is covered by dense tropical rainforest, making it one of the most biodiverse nations in the world. The interior is home to rivers, waterfalls, and protected reserves. The country’s capital, Paramaribo, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved colonial architecture.

Major attractions include Brownsberg Nature Park, Central Suriname Nature Reserve, Presidential Palace, and Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral. The country’s cultural diversity and natural beauty make it a hidden gem in South America.
