Japan Launching Electronic Travel Authorization for Visa-Exempt Visitors

Japan is set to introduce an electronic travel authorization (ETA) requirement for visa-exempt foreign visitors to enhance security and streamline visitor management. This measure, similar to those in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, will require travelers to submit their travel and personal information online before departure.
Implementation Timeline
The exact implementation date has not been announced but is expected to be part of measures introduced next year. The initiative aims to prevent illegal stays and will involve detailed visitor information submission, including business partners or medical treatment details.
Visa-Free Entry and New Requirements
Japan currently allows visa-free entry to citizens of 71 countries and territories, who will need to apply for the ETA once it is implemented. This change is part of broader efforts to support foreign nationals in Japan and improve Japanese language skills among foreigners.
Long-Term Goals and Visitor Data
The ETA is planned to come into effect by 2030, aligning with Japan’s goal to welcome 60 million tourists. Japan has seen a significant increase in tourist arrivals, with over three million visitors in May, marking a 60 percent increase from the previous year.
