Liberia's 2026 holiday calendar includes fixed national holidays, weekday-based observances and officially designated substitute dates. How Many Public Holiday Dates Are There in Liberia in 2026?

The verified VisaBoards dataset contains 14 public-holiday dates for Liberia in 2026. This count includes officially designated observed dates for Joseph Jenkins Roberts' Birth Anniversary and Independence Day as separate calendar dates.

The primary year-specific reference is the Embassy of the Republic of Liberia's 2026 public-holiday calendar. Presidential Proclamations issued through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provide additional confirmation for holidays requiring annual observance notices.

National Holidays in Liberia

Liberia's public-holiday system reflects the country's political history, national identity, military service, religious traditions and the legacies of prominent former presidents.

Important national holidays include Armed Forces Day, Decoration Day, National Unification Day, Independence Day, National Flag Day and the birth anniversaries of Presidents Joseph Jenkins Roberts and William V. S. Tubman.

Armed Forces Day in Liberia

Armed Forces Day is observed on 11 February each year. For 2026, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. proclaimed Wednesday, 11 February as Armed Forces Day and a national holiday throughout Liberia.

The official proclamation ordered government offices, public buildings and business houses to close for the observance and stated that the holiday is based on legislation designating 11 February each year as Armed Forces Day.

Decoration Day in Liberia

Decoration Day falls on Wednesday, 11 March 2026. Liberia's official Embassy calendar classifies the date as a national holiday.

Decoration Day is a national remembrance observance honoring deceased Liberians, including national heroes and people who contributed to the country's development.

Joseph Jenkins Roberts' Birth Anniversary

The birth anniversary of Joseph Jenkins Roberts, Liberia's first President, is legally associated with 15 March each year.

In 2026, 15 March fell on a Sunday. President Boakai proclaimed Sunday, 15 March as the 217th Memorial Birth Anniversary and expressly directed that it be observed on Monday, 16 March 2026 as a public holiday throughout Liberia.

The VisaBoards database therefore records both the statutory anniversary date and the officially designated observed holiday as separate dates.

National Fast and Prayer Day

National Fast and Prayer Day was observed on Friday, 10 April 2026. The Embassy's official calendar lists the date as a national holiday, and the Executive Mansion confirmed the national observance held on 10 April.

The occasion is traditionally dedicated to prayer, fasting and reflection for Liberia's peace, welfare and national development.

National Unification Day

National Unification Day is observed on 14 May. In 2026, the date fell on a Thursday.

The Executive Mansion's official 2026 message describes National Unification Day as an occasion to reflect on Liberia's common nationhood, shared identity and national unity.

Independence Day in Liberia

Liberia's Independence Day is legally observed on 26 July each year, commemorating the declaration of independence on 26 July 1847.

In 2026, 26 July fell on a Sunday. The Presidential Proclamation therefore designated Monday, 27 July 2026 as the nationwide observed national holiday.

Both 26 July and the officially designated 27 July observed holiday are represented separately in the verified VisaBoards dataset.

National Flag Day

National Flag Day is observed on 24 August. Liberian legislation approved in 1915 designates 24 August each year as National Flag Day and a national holiday.

The holiday recognizes the Liberian flag as a symbol of national sovereignty, identity and independence.

National Thanksgiving Day

Liberia observes National Thanksgiving Day on the first Thursday of November. In 2026, that rule places the holiday on Thursday, 5 November.

The observance originates from legislation enacted in 1883 establishing the first Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving.

President William V. S. Tubman's Birthday

The birth anniversary of former President William V. S. Tubman is legally observed on 29 November each year as a national holiday.

In 2026, 29 November falls on a Sunday. The official Embassy calendar lists 29 November as the national holiday.

No separate 30 November 2026 substitute date should be added to the VisaBoards database unless the Government of Liberia officially designates one. Observed dates in Liberia can be established by Presidential Proclamation, so a weekend holiday should not be automatically moved without official confirmation.

Christmas Day in Liberia

Christmas Day is observed as a national holiday on 25 December. In 2026, Christmas Day falls on a Friday.

Is Africa Day a Public Holiday in Liberia?

Africa Day on 25 May is officially recognized in Liberia, but the Embassy's 2026 calendar classifies it as a Working Holiday rather than a National Holiday.

For this reason, Africa Day is not included in the main VisaBoards nationwide non-working public-holiday dataset. Including it without its working-holiday classification would make the public-holiday schedule misleading.

How Do Observed Holidays Work in Liberia?

Liberia may designate a different weekday for the public observance of a statutory holiday when the anniversary falls on a weekend, but a substitute day should not be assumed automatically.

For example, the government expressly moved the public observance of Joseph Jenkins Roberts' Birth Anniversary from Sunday, 15 March 2026 to Monday, 16 March. It similarly designated Monday, 27 July as the observed holiday for Independence Day, which fell on Sunday, 26 July.

By contrast, a future weekend holiday should not be given an additional Monday date unless an official proclamation or other authoritative government announcement establishes that substitute holiday.

Are Government Offices and Businesses Closed on National Holidays?

Presidential Proclamations for major Liberian national holidays commonly direct government offices and business houses to close during the official observance.

For example, the 2026 Armed Forces Day proclamation ordered government offices, public buildings and business houses closed, while the Independence Day proclamation similarly ordered government offices and business houses closed during the observed national holiday.

Specific closure instructions should still be checked in the applicable Presidential Proclamation because arrangements can vary by holiday and year.
