How Public Holidays Are Defined in Saint Kitts and Nevis
The main legal framework is the Public Holidays Act, CAP. 23.23. The Act identifies statutory public holidays and sets rules affecting banks, shops, stores and public offices.
The statutory schedule includes New Year’s Day, Independence Day, National Heroes Day, Boxing Day, Easter Monday, Labour Day, Whit Monday and Emancipation Day. Christmas Day and Good Friday are identified in the Act as common-law holidays.
January 2 is also recognized by the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis as the Carnival Last Lap public holiday, marking the end of the national Carnival season.
Fixed and Movable Public Holidays
Some public holidays in Saint Kitts and Nevis occur on fixed calendar dates. New Year’s Day falls on January 1, National Heroes Day on September 16, Independence Day on September 19 and Christmas Day on December 25.
Other holidays move according to the calendar. Easter Monday follows Easter Sunday, Whit Monday follows Pentecost, Labour Day is legally defined as the first Monday in May, and Emancipation Day is the first Monday in August.
Emancipation Day in Saint Kitts and Nevis
The Public Holidays Act defines Emancipation Day as the first Monday in August. In 2026, the first Monday in August falls on August 3.
This statutory rule is more authoritative than holiday calendars that simply associate Emancipation Day with August 1. For the national public-holiday database, the legally defined first Monday is the relevant date.
What Happens When a Public Holiday Falls on a Weekend?
Saint Kitts and Nevis does not apply a simple rule that every Saturday or Sunday public holiday automatically moves to Monday.
Under the Public Holidays Act, New Year’s Day, Independence Day, National Heroes Day and the Sovereign’s birthday provision receive the following Monday as a public holiday when the specified day falls on a Sunday.
Boxing Day has a separate statutory rule. If Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, the following Monday becomes a public holiday. If Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, the following Monday and Tuesday are public holidays.
Because Independence Day falls on Saturday, September 19 in 2026, the statutory Sunday substitution rule does not automatically create a public holiday on Monday, September 21.
Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25 in 2026 and Boxing Day falls on Saturday, December 26. The statutory Christmas and Boxing Day provisions therefore do not automatically establish Monday, December 28 as an additional public holiday.
Can Special Public Holidays Be Declared?
Yes. Section 5 of the Public Holidays Act allows the Governor-General, acting through a proclamation, to appoint a special public holiday throughout Saint Kitts and Nevis or within a particular island, town, district or village.
The same legal mechanism can also be used in a particular year to replace a statutory holiday with another day when officially proclaimed. Special and one-off holiday announcements should therefore be checked against the Government Gazette or another official government publication before being treated as nationwide holidays.
Culturama and Regional Holiday Status
Culturama is one of the most important cultural festivals on Nevis, but a festival date should not automatically be classified as an annual nationwide public holiday.
The government has previously used a formal proclamation to grant special public-holiday status for a Culturama occasion. For example, a 2024 proclamation declared August 6, 2024 a public holiday in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Nevis Culturama Festival.
For database purposes, a Culturama date should be added as a nationwide or regional public holiday only when the applicable government proclamation or another authoritative official notice supports that classification for the relevant year.
Are Banks and Government Offices Closed on Public Holidays?
The Public Holidays Act provides that statutory public holidays are close holidays for banks and public offices, as well as shops and stores covered by the Act.
The legislation also contains limited exceptions. Certain drug stores may open when necessary for prescriptions and medicines, petrol stations and garages may provide specified services, and food or drink may be sold in the morning under conditions stated in the Act. The Governor-General may also authorize particular classes of shops to open by an order published in the Gazette.
Do Public Holidays Affect Annual Leave?
Saint Kitts and Nevis employment legislation treats public holidays separately when calculating statutory annual paid holiday periods. The Government’s published Holidays with Pay legislation states that Sundays and public holidays falling within an annual paid holiday period are not counted as part of that annual leave entitlement.
Workers who need guidance about pay, working arrangements or contractual rights on a particular public holiday should check the applicable employment legislation and their employment terms.
