Design Lead (Primary) - Substation (Electrical)

Larsen & Toubro is seeking a Design Lead (Primary) for Substation (Electrical) roles in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. This position involves reviewing and executing primary engineering activities for AIS/GIS Substation Projects, with a strong emphasis on layout engineering and BIM 3D model development. The role requires coordination with various departments and support throughout the project lifecycle, from pre-bid to commissioning and warranty periods. The Design Lead will manage a team of Design Engineers and Draughtspersons to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to a high standard of engineering quality.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and execute Primary Engineering Activities for AIS/GIS Substation Projects.
• Facilitate BIM 3D Model development for Substations and coordinate with modellers.
• Coordinate with other departments including Electrical, Civil/Structural, MEP for inter-departmental checks.
• Provide support for engineering activities from pre-bid to commissioning and warranty periods.
• Lead a team of Design Engineers and Draughtspersons to manage engineering activities within budget and schedule.
• Review Engineering documents prepared at Remote Engineering offices and assign to Local Adaptation consultants.
• Coordinate with contractors for construction work and support in solving construction issues.
• Obtain drawing approval for construction activities from relevant teams.
• Ensure timely delivery of Engineering Drawings & Documents aligned with the Project Schedule.
• Seek and obtain spatial requirements from the Design Lead (Secondary) and incorporate into relevant Drawings.
• Review primary drawings by Design Engineers & Draughtspersons and check design & sizing calculations.
• Review Vendor deliverables pertaining to Primary Engineering.
• Coordinate with multiple disciplines for ensuring inter-departmental checks.
• Provide support & clarifications to the Site Execution team.
• Check pre-award evaluation of vendors and forward validation documents.
• Inspect equipment from finalized vendors.
• Clarify design and client requirements to the Site Execution Team.
• Collect inputs for project details from client & Project Engineering Manager.
• Coordinate with Operations team for design specifications approval.
• Check deliverables prepared by Engineering office for construction suitability.
• Provide support to the secondary team for reviewing Vendor drawings.
• Submit man-hour requirements for design and drawing review.

Requirements

• Overall knowledge of equipment layouts and necessary calculations.
• Detailed knowledge of Substation equipment and their Layouts.
• Understanding of primary engineering activities including SLD Preparation, Layout Engineering, Earthing, Cable Routing, Lighting, Lightning Protection, Cable Tray Routing.
• Capability to perform design & sizing calculations for Busbar, UPS, DG, LT Transformer, Earthing Conductor, etc.
• Knowledge on National and International Codes and Standards.
• Ability to interpret contractual technical requirements.
• Overall understanding of inter-disciplinary (Civil & Structural, Mechanical and Instrumentation) design aspects of electrical equipment.
• General awareness of Dialux and MS Office.
• Desirable awareness of BIM, Digsilent, PSCAD & CYMGRD.
