North Macedonia Overview
North Macedonia, officially the Republic of North Macedonia, is a landlocked country in Southeast Europe, located in the central Balkans. It shares borders with Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west. The capital and largest city is Skopje.
North Macedonia is known for its mountainous terrain, scenic lakes, and rich cultural heritage. The country blends Mediterranean and Balkan influences, evident in its architecture, cuisine, and traditions. Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Albania.
The economy is diverse, with strong sectors in agriculture, textiles, and services, as well as growing tourism and information technology industries. North Macedonia is a candidate for EU membership and joined NATO in 2020.
With a population of about 2 million, the country is ethnically diverse, consisting mainly of Macedonians and Albanians, with smaller Turkish, Roma, and Serbian communities. The official language is Macedonian, and the Cyrillic alphabet is used.
