Vatican City, officially the Vatican City State (Stato della Città del Vaticano), is an independent city-state enclaved within Rome, Italy. It is the smallest sovereign state in the world, both by area and population. The Vatican serves as the spiritual and administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church and is the residence of the Pope.

Established in 1929 with the signing of the Lateran Treaty, Vatican City is the global headquarters of the Catholic Church. Despite its small size, it holds immense religious, cultural, and historical significance. The city-state is governed as an absolute monarchy with the Pope as its head of state.

The Vatican is world-renowned for its architectural masterpieces, including St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums, which house one of the most extensive and valuable art collections in the world. It attracts millions of visitors and pilgrims each year.

Although small, Vatican City has its own postal system, media outlets, and even a small army — the Swiss Guard — responsible for protecting the Pope. The official languages are Italian and Latin, and the economy is supported by tourism, donations, and the sale of stamps and publications.
