Nauru Overview
Nauru is a small island country in the Central Pacific Ocean, located just south of the equator and northwest of Tarawa in Kiribati. It is the world’s third smallest country by area, after Vatican City and Monaco, and the smallest island nation. The capital district is Yaren, which serves as the de facto administrative center.
Nauru is a raised coral island surrounded by a fringing reef. Historically, it was one of the world’s richest nations per capita due to extensive phosphate mining, but the depletion of reserves led to economic challenges. Today, its economy relies on phosphate remnants, fishing, and regional cooperation, along with Australian aid programs.
The island has a tropical climate with constant sea breezes and an average temperature of around 28°C. Despite its small size, Nauru has a strong community culture rooted in Micronesian and Polynesian traditions. English and Nauruan are the official languages, and Christianity is the predominant religion.
Nauru’s unique geography and history make it an important symbol of resilience among small island states, as it faces environmental and sustainability challenges due to its size and limited resources.
