Timor-Leste Overview
Timor-Leste, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de Timor-Leste), commonly known as East Timor, is a country in Southeast Asia. It occupies the eastern half of the island of Timor, sharing a land border with Indonesia to the west, and is bounded by the Timor Sea to the south and the Banda Sea to the north. The capital and largest city is Dili.
Timor-Leste was a Portuguese colony for over 400 years before it declared independence in 1975. However, it was invaded and occupied by Indonesia soon after, leading to a long struggle for independence, which was officially restored in 2002. Today, Timor-Leste is one of the youngest nations in the world, building its democracy and economy after decades of conflict.
The country’s economy is based on agriculture, coffee production, and petroleum resources. Its natural beauty—featuring rugged mountains, pristine beaches, and coral reefs—makes it an emerging eco-tourism destination. Portuguese and Tetum are the official languages, and the culture reflects a unique blend of Southeast Asian and Portuguese influences.
Popular attractions include Atauro Island, Cristo Rei of Dili, Mount Ramelau, and Jaco Island. Timor-Leste offers a peaceful retreat for divers, hikers, and cultural explorers seeking authentic experiences off the beaten path.
