Tonga Overview
Tonga, officially the Kingdom of Tonga (Tongan: Puleʻanga Fakatuʻi ʻo Tonga), is a Polynesian island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. It consists of around 170 islands, of which about 36 are inhabited. The country lies south of Samoa and east of Fiji. The capital and largest city is Nukuʻalofa, located on the main island of Tongatapu.
Tonga is the only remaining constitutional monarchy in the Pacific and has never been colonized, though it maintained close ties with the British Empire until it gained full independence in 1970. The nation’s culture, known as “Tongan Way” or Anga Fakatonga, emphasizes respect, community, and tradition.
The economy is largely based on agriculture, remittances from overseas Tongans, and tourism. The islands are renowned for their pristine beaches, coral reefs, and whale-watching opportunities. Tonga’s people are known for their hospitality and strong sense of identity rooted in Polynesian heritage.
Popular attractions include the Haʻamonga ʻa Maui Trilithon, Mapuʻa ʻa Vaea Blowholes, and the Vavaʻu Islands, a paradise for sailing and diving enthusiasts.
