Dominican Republic, officially the Dominican Republic (Spanish: República Dominicana), occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. It shares the island with Haiti to the west and has coastlines along the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The capital and largest city is Santo Domingo.

The country is famed for its beaches, mountain ranges, and colonial heritage. Tourism, free-trade zone manufacturing (apparel, medical devices), agriculture, mining, and services drive the economy. Music and dance—especially merengue and bachata—along with baseball are central to national culture.

Spanish is the official language, and the currency is the Dominican peso (DOP). The climate is tropical with regional variations, and the interior hosts the Caribbean’s highest peak, Pico Duarte.
