Tajikistan Overview
Tajikistan, officially the Republic of Tajikistan (Tajik: Ҷумҳурии Тоҷикистон), is a landlocked country located in Central Asia. It is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. The capital and largest city is Dushanbe.
Tajikistan is a mountainous country, home to the Pamir Mountains, often called the “Roof of the World.” Over 90% of the land area is covered by mountains, and it contains some of the highest peaks in the world. The nation was part of the Soviet Union until its independence in 1991. It has a rich Persian-influenced culture, with deep historical ties to the Silk Road.
The economy of Tajikistan is based on agriculture, hydropower, aluminum production, and remittances from abroad. The country has made significant progress in developing its infrastructure and energy sector. The population is predominantly Tajik, with smaller Uzbek and Russian communities. The official language is Tajik (a variety of Persian), and Islam is the dominant religion.
