Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a Southeast Asian nation bordered by Bangladesh and India to the west and northwest, China to the north and northeast, and Laos and Thailand to the east and southeast, with a long coastline along the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. The capital is Nay Pyi Taw; the largest city and commercial hub is Yangon.

Myanmar’s landscapes range from the Himalayan foothills in the north to river valleys and delta plains formed by the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy), to tropical coasts and islands in the south. Signature cultural and natural highlights include Bagan (UNESCO) with thousands of temples, Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Inle Lake with leg-rowing fishermen and floating gardens, U Bein Bridge near Mandalay, and the pilgrimage site Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock).

The economy features natural gas, agriculture (rice, pulses/beans, sesame), garments, fisheries, gems, and tourism in select regions. Burmese (Myanmar language) is official; many ethnic languages are spoken nationwide. The currency is the Myanmar Kyat (MMK).
