Burundi Overview
Burundi, officially the Republic of Burundi, is a small, landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, along the northern shores of Lake Tanganyika. The capital and largest city is Gitega (political capital), while Bujumbura remains the economic hub.
Burundi is known for its rolling hills, coffee plantations, and scenic lakeside landscapes. The economy is largely based on agriculture, especially coffee, tea, cotton, and livestock. Despite being one of the smallest African countries, Burundi boasts a rich cultural heritage, with traditional drumming, dance, and crafts being central to its identity.
French, Kirundi, and English are the official languages. The currency is the Burundian Franc (BIF). While challenges persist in infrastructure and development, Burundi continues to progress through regional cooperation within the East African Community (EAC).
