Algeria, officially the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, is the largest country in Africa, located in North Africa along the Mediterranean coast. It borders Tunisia and Libya to the east, Niger to the southeast, Mali and Mauritania to the southwest, Western Sahara and Morocco to the west. The capital and largest city is Algiers.

Most of Algeria lies within the Sahara Desert, featuring sweeping sand seas (ergs), rocky plateaus (hamadas), mountains, and oases, while the northern Tell Atlas hosts fertile plains and Mediterranean climate. The country’s cultural mosaic blends Arab, Amazigh (Berber), and Mediterranean influences, seen in historic medinas, Roman sites, and Saharan architecture.

Algeria’s economy is driven by hydrocarbons—natural gas and crude oil—alongside agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and growing renewable energy projects. With strategic access to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, Algeria is an important energy supplier and regional trade partner.

From the Casbah of Algiers and Roman ruins of Timgad to the surreal rock art of Tassili n’Ajjer and dunes of Erg Chebbi & Grand Erg Occidental, Algeria offers epic landscapes and deep history.
