South Sudan Overview
South Sudan is a landlocked country located in East-Central Africa, bordered by Sudan to the north, Ethiopia to the east, Kenya to the southeast, Uganda to the south, Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest, and Central African Republic to the west. The capital and largest city is Juba.
South Sudan became the world’s newest nation on 9 July 2011, following its independence from Sudan after decades of civil conflict. The country is rich in natural resources, including oil, fertile agricultural land, and abundant wildlife. Despite facing challenges in governance and infrastructure, South Sudan continues to make progress in peacebuilding and national development.
The people of South Sudan belong to diverse ethnic groups, including Dinka, Nuer, Shilluk, and Bari. English is the official language, and the South Sudanese Pound (SSP) is the national currency. The economy relies heavily on oil exports and agriculture, with efforts ongoing to diversify industries and improve education and healthcare systems.
Notable landmarks include Juba Bridge, Boma National Park, and the vast wetlands of the Sudd, one of the world’s largest inland wetlands.
